Sarah Lively started making these wonderful fried pies in her own kitchen and the business grew from there. The story of Backroads Bakery really puts me in mind of the American dream. I love that she is still involved in the pie making process and that it is a family run business. When you buy pies from Backroads, you aren't buying from a huge corporation, but from a local Texas business. I am all for supporting small Texas business and this one produces a truly outstanding product. They don't even advertise, relying instead on customer word of mouth. That says a lot about a company, that they still do quite well without advertising.
Backroads Bakery fried pies have a shelf life of about ten days. They could extend this if they changed the dough recipe, but that is not going to happen. I like that these pies are preservative free and in my opinion the crust on the pies it what makes them so great! They are truly like no other pie I've ever eaten. The crust is not greasy like you find with other fried pies. The crust is a nice compliment to the sweet, rich filling in each pie.
You really need to try one for yourself! If you live in Texas, you can click here to see if there is a store carrying Backroads Bakery fried pies in your area. If not you can still check out their products page and have them shipped to you.
Best of all, I have a dozen of these fantastic fried pies to give to one luck reader. You will get your choice of one dozen pies and Backroads Bakery will ship them to your house. I learned that it is a family owned and run business that doesn't use advertising to gain customers. It's mostly all word of mouth.
Orders must be made in multiples of 12 pies, but you can mix and match the flavors to suit your desires. For example: 3 Apple, 3 Apricot, 3 Cherry, & 3 Buttermilk, or any other combination that totals 12. Pies are shipped on the Monday after the order is received
Since taking over the business, Bill has computerized the tracking of the various flavors of pies sold in individual stores.
